2001 ford excursion review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. As big as a bus, but best used as a tow truck. introductionford's gargantuan sport-utility is a wonderfully stable platform for towing heavy trailers and can at the same time carry a truckload of fishermen. It rides fairly well for a heavy-duty truck and it's luxurious and comfortable. For those who want to tow trailers up to 10,000 pounds, the excursion is a good alternative to a pickup with a cap. the ford excursion should not, however, be considered as an alternative to a minivan. It's far too thirsty, and its size and design make for poor maneuverability and handling when compared with minivans and light-duty suvs. lineupford excursion comes in two trim levels: xlt and limited. xlts come with a nice cloth interior with comfortable seats that offer good support for long drives and a high level of standard equipment. limited trim adds leather and a few more goodies that are optional on the xlt. More standard equipment is added to the limited models for 2001, including outside mirrors with integrated turn signals, fog lamps integrated in the front bumpers, and upgraded leather seating surfaces. three engines are available: a v8, a v10, and a turbocharged diesel. The base xlt 4x2 retails for $34,245. We drove a $37,560 xlt 4x4 with the v10. The diesel adds about $4,000 to the bottom line. walkaroundbased on ford's super duty f-series pickup trucks, the excursion is more than seven inches longer than the chevrolet suburban, the former suv heavyweight. Inside the excursion is a comfortable interior. The dash is attractive and well designed and all of the controls are easy to find and operate. excursion's rear cargo doors are split three ways. The rear doors are half height, like dutch doors. It generates 310 horsepower and 425 foot-pounds of torque. A 5. 4-liter v8 is available as a no-cost option, but few will be built; it puts out 255 horsepower and 350 foot-pounds of torque. Optional $60 trailer mirrors feature little convex mirrors at the bottom that eliminate blind spots. Ford says the class iv receiver hitch, which comes standard, is designed to prevent smaller cars from going underneath the rear bumper, while a specially designed blockerbeam is designed to accomplish the same goal up front. interiorthe excursion comes with a nicely designed interior. Six adults can ride in comfort with 48 cubic feet of cargo space left behind them. Removing the third-row seat is easy: flip the seatback forward, yank a bar at the foot of the seat and pull the seat toward the rear of the vehicle; it glides along on rollers. The seat weighs 75 pounds, but in short order i pulled it out and threw it into the back of another suv on a cold montana morning. set up as a two-seater, the excursion can carry an outlandish amount of cargo. A sheet of plywood slides in easy and lays flat on the floor. Two people could sleep in comfort on the huge, flat cargo area. Believe it or not, we managed to fill an excursion. We were finishing up a three-day float down oregon's deschutes river. He quickly stuffed all of the supplies from base camp and enough fishing equipment for eight people inside. When he was done stuffing, only seating for two remained and the rear-view mirror was rendered useless. Granted, he could have packed more efficiently, but he was grateful for such a large storage container. After reorganizing the equipment and putting some of it into another vehicle, six of us piled into the excursion and made the long trip back to the portland area. Cruising along steadily with this load, the excursion demonstrated its virtues of size, stability and power. It's smooth and quiet. The v10 is a delightful engine. It produces 310 horsepower and can propel the excursion along the interstate at high rates of speed. The v10 generates a very impressive 425 foot-pounds of torque at 3250 rpm. But an excursion 4x4 weighs about 7,200-pounds, so its acceleration performance at high altitudes seems no better than an explorer or expedition. Still, it had no trouble passing other vehicles on two-lane roads outside yellowstone national park. It seems unaffected by high altitude and i was amazed at its ability to accelerate past slower cars on two-lane roads. Think of it as an economical engine for utility companies in the flatlands. while the 4x2 comes with ford's twin i-beam front suspension and coil springs, the 4x4 uses a solid front axle and leaf springs. Differences in ride and handling between the two are surprisingly subtle. The 4x4 rides and handles superbly, tackling corners with confidence and offering good grip on dirt roads. It does not offer the ride sophistication of the newest generation suburban and yukon xl 1500-series models, however. Strong crosswinds in the madison river valley and an 18-wheeler going in the opposite direction had little effect on the excursion at highway speeds. its long wheelbase means the excursion is not a serious off-road vehicle. The excursion does not offer a system like gm's autotrac, which distributes torque front to rear automatically for slushy, inconsistent conditions. I like overkill when towing long distances through bad weather and the excursion should pull a 6,000-pound trailer better than an expedition. Unlike most suvs, all excursions come with d-load range light-truck tires, lt265/75r-16d. Supremely stable, it feels safe and secure on the open highway. Bucket Seats✔ Cloth Interior

Eight-passenger capability with better fuel economy. introductionthe gmc acadia may be a harbinger of refined, fuel-efficient vehicles that offer the utility of a big suv. The acadia is a crossover suv, meaning it looks like a truck but it's built like a car. Crossovers have been gaining in popularity because they make so much sense for so many families, but what sets the acadia apart is its size: it's big, similar in size to the gmc yukon and chevy tahoe, inside and out. And it can carry a lot of cargo. For starters, it's big and roomy. The driver sits high off the ground and benefits from that commanding view down the road that many like. Features like rear-seat dvd entertainment make it a good choice for families. the only places where the acadia falls short of truck-based suvs is in heavy-duty towing or for slogging through military-grade muck. Properly equipped, the gmc acadia can tow 4,500 pound, while a yukon is rated to pull 7,500 pounds or more. Based on the silverado pickup, the yukon can handle rugged terrain. It absorbs rough pavement in a soothing manner and takes corners reassuringly for such a large vehicle. It handles better and is smoother than a yukon and other truck-based suvs. Gmc's 275-horsepower 3. 6-liter v6 is smooth and sophisticated and supplies good acceleration performance. Its six-speed automatic transmission is responsive, smooth and efficient, further aiding fuel economy. three rows of seats provide room for seven or eight, though it's more comfortable with six. Two adults and two or three children plus their belongings can be carried with ease. Acadia comes loaded with safety equipment, including curtain air bags that provide head protection and side-impact airbags that provide torso protection; electronic stability control and other active safety features can help the driver avoid accidents. for 2008, acadia comes standard with brake assist, which helps the driver apply full braking performance in a panic stop. A rearview camera now comes with the optional navigation system, and we recommend it highly to help the driver avoid a tragic accident when backing up. Improvements to the all-wheel-drive and traction-control systems enhance and refine their performance for 2008. Xm satellite radio comes standard on the 2008 acadia. A second-row center console has been added to seven-seat models, there are new metallic colors, and other equipment added for 2008. lineupthe 2008 gmc acadia comes in basic sle and up-level slt trim. Tires are 255/65 on 18-inch painted aluminum wheels. Options for sle include bose stereo 870), second-row captain's chairs and console 495), and other equipment from the higher-line model. Eight-passenger seating is available for a credit (-$495). Dvd entertainment is offered as a stand-alone option 1,295). Brake assist has been added for 2008. air curtains are low-pressure air bags that come down from the ceiling and cover the side windows (of all three rows on the acadia) to provide head protection in a side-impact crash or rollover; in a rollover the air curtains could also help keep arms and heads inside the vehicle. Studies by the insurance institute for highway safety (iihs), which is funded by the insurance industry, have shown such head protection greatly improves the chance of surviving a side-impact crash. However, air curtains are not a substitute for seat belts. The front-seat side-impact air bags provide torso protection in a side-impact crash. Iihs studies have also shown these, too, are valuable, but not as important as head protection. onstar uses a global positioning system and an extra powerful cellular telephone to put the driver in touch with the onstar center which is manned 24/7. The center can tell where the vehicle is located and send help or provide other assistance. Should the air bags deploy the system can automatically notify the onstar center that an accident has occurred and where the vehicle is located so it can then send help. Onstar service is free for the first year but after that requires a subscription fee. walkaroundat 201 inches overall, the gmc acadia is a foot longer than a honda pilot and almost 8 inches longer than a ford explorer. The gmc acadia shares basic mechanical components with the buick enclave and saturn outlook. the exterior design team for the gmc acadia managed to give a relatively large vehicle a look that has moved away from bulky without sacrificing a kind of active grace. Happily gmc has avoided the threatening-suv school of design that has been so popular. the rounded front end features a bight grille surround framing a prominent gmc emblem. Distinctively curved headlight clusters give the acadia a slightly startled expression. Projector beams are standard; high-intensity discharge (hid) head lights are optional. Small round fog lights nestle below. The front bumper is massive, but this is camouflaged somewhat by its black color and by a bright strip at the top. most noticeable from the side are rounded fender flares and a horizontal character line that sets out to connect them but disappears into the doors instead. Tasteful bright trim and polished aluminum roof rails add visual interest. The shape of the acadia is aerodynamically efficient (for an suv), with a drag coefficient of 0. 344. Heated, power-adjustable outside mirrors are standard on all models. Body-color outside mirrors with integrated turn signals are standard on slt; power-folding mirrors with integrated turn signals and auto-dimming come with the slt-2 package. the rear view is generic suv/crossover accented by interesting two-tone taillight clusters and quad exhaust tips. eighteen-inch wheels and tires are standard, and 19-inch wheels are available. General motors has acknowledged the interiors of many gm vehicles needed to be upgraded, and the acadia engineers banished cheap-looking plastic and bargain-basement cloth. Their effort shows in the acadia. they did not lose track of basic functionality, however. The heating and cooling controls are easy to find and use. The instruments are legible, not lost in some fussy attempt at a complex design. big cupholders and a deep bin between the front seats are a plus, but the pockets on the inside door panels are too narrow for any meaningful storage. the front seats are wide and comfortable. The steering wheel tilts and telescopes, making it easy for drivers tall and short to get comfortable. As with any suv, the driver sits high, with a good view down the road. But visibility to the rear isn't great, requiring care when backing up. We recommend opting for ultrasonic rear park assist, which can detect objects out of the driver's line of sight. We further recommend getting the rearview camera, which comes with the navigation system. the 2008 acadia sle comes standard with eight-passenger seating; a 60/40 split bench in the second row accommodates three people. The up-level slt models come standard with second-row captain's chairs; they cut passenger capacity to seven but are more comfortable. Either model can be ordered with the other seating arrangement, however, for extra cost on the sle or a credit on the slt. Wrangler has been modernized with a contemporary engine, electronics inside and underneath, and the body panels are now artfully curved for stiffness while appearing flat. however, the wrangler remains the most maneuverable and trail capable vehicle from a showroom and will go places most owners don't dare drive. The delta in wheelbase (the distance from front wheel center to rear) is similar to that between a regular cab and crew cab pickup. heated leather upholstery is available for wrangler. No jeeper ever had it quite like this. all wranglers are powered by chrysler's 24-valve 3. 6-liter v6, here rated at 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. There's a choice of 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. Indeed, they will travel the interstate with a modicum of comfort and civility but that's not what they're built for. Wranglers are better suited to all-weather urban runabouts, those living on a beach or off the grid or beaten path, or for those whose idea of a freeway is a fast section of dry wash or graded dirt run in 2wd. The removable hardtop comes off in three pieces, a pair of t-tops with a sunroof over the rear seat. At least the usb port means music without discs or tapes getting dusty. we've driven rubicons on their namesake trail, oregon's tillamook forest, michigan dunes and all the best (worst) stuff moab has to offer, in far more comfort than wranglers of old.
